Abraham Lincoln * Vandalia IL Statehouse 1836
    Historic Wood Relic
Own an Authentic piece of wood from Vandalia Statehouse where Abraham Lincoln served as an elected Representative and received his Law license!
From 1836-1839 the Statehouse at Vandalia served as the capitol of Illinois.
Abraham Lincoln, elected to the Illinois General Assembly in 1834, served as a Representative during this period in the then new Statehouse building.
Lincoln received his license to practice law in the Supreme Court chamber of this building on Sept. 9, 1836. His very first public recorded statement against the institution of slavery was made here in 1837. In 1839 the capitol of Illinois was moved to Springfield.
In the 1930’s, the State of Illinois began a restoration of the historic Vandalia Statehouse.
This small piece of wood attached to the front was originally from a salvaged oak joist that was made into a souvenir during this period, as shown in the images.
The first image on ebay shows the display card with the wood attached just below an early view of the historic Statehouse The second ebay image shows the back of the display with a description of the history and images of the original wood souvenir and label placed on by the maker.
The actual piece of wood is just over ½
inch long and is mounted on a 5 x 7 inch descriptive COA display that can easily be framed. Each piece of wood will vary slightly depending on how it was cut from the original larger piece. The display is protected by a stiff plastic protector. The front image of the display is an early view of the Vandalia Statehouse with the wood mounted below. The back has a brief history of Lincoln’s relation to the Statehouse and shows the original wood. The original wood souvenir, made in the 1930’s is NOT for sale….only the small cut piece mounted on front.
This would look great matted and framed and would make a very special gift for anyone with an interest in history!
